Preparing Your Home for Fall
As the leaves start changing and the days begin getting shorter, it’s a good time to start thinking about the colder months approaching and preparing your home for fall. While you’re inside enjoying the comfort of a cozy couch and blanket, take a second to think about what improvements you could make to ensure that winter doesn’t creep up on you! The following tips could prove helpful as we begin to enjoy the beauty of fall and anticipate the year’s end.
Rotate the direction of ceiling fans. It’s a good time to redistribute the airflow throughout the rooms in your home. Most fans have a switch that allow the fan blades to rotate either clockwise or counterclockwise. One direction pushes air down to create a breeze and the other sucks it up which helps distribute the heat.
Clean the windows. Why not utilize the little daylight that’s left and clean off the bugs, dust, grime, and other elements from your windows. It’s a good time to do this while the temperatures are still fairly warm. A clean window will allow you appreciate the bright sunshine come winter!
Schedule a heating unit checkup. The last thing you want to experience in the dead of winter is a broken heating unit. As temperatures begin to fall, it’s smart to schedule a checkup for your unit to be serviced by a professional and checked for corrosion, dirty filters, leaks, etc.
Have a chimney sweep inspect the fireplace. As you eagerly anticipate burning some wood for the long winter nights ahead, it’s wise to make sure that your fireplace will burn efficiently. Professional chimney sweep companies can provide services to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning, so this is an important tip!
Insulate exposed pipes. If you’ve ever seen or dealt with the aftermath of a burst pipe, you know it’s a pain (on top of expensive). The good news is that it’s usually preventable! In order to keep your pipes warm through the colder temperatures, keep them insulated with foam or heat tape. The most at-risk pipes are often the ones in unheated areas like basements, garages, etc.
