Sectional or Sofa? How to Choose and What Will Work in Your Space?

One of the most rewarding feelings is coming home from a long hard day at work and sinking into the couch and relaxing. Over recent years, sectionals have taken over homes of families all across the globe. Sectionals offer plenty of seating for the whole family, while sofas can give your living room more versatility. There is no official guide that shows a sectional is better than a sofa or vice versa. It simply comes down to what would work best for your space and which one matches your style. We at Cleo’s Furniture know how overwhelming this process can be, which is why we’ve put together this list of things to keep in mind when making your purchase.
Things To Consider
- Size of your room: Before you head to the store, you’ll want to consider the size of your living room and how much room you will have to work with. Sofas typically work better in smaller spaces, however, a small strategically placed sectional can make your living room less cluttered than the traditional sofa and chairs.
- Number of seats: If you only need seats for a small number of people, the sofa and chair combination is a solid choice, but- if you are looking to seat a larger number of people or host people frequently, you might consider a sectional. If you like the style of a sofa but want the seating that a sectional has to offer- consider getting two sofas and have them face each other, or have them cornered. The possibilities are endless.
- Layout variety: Are you somebody who likes to rearrange their living room frequently? If so, a sofa gives you more options when it comes to the layout of your room. Sectionals tend to limit the number of variations you can set up in your room. With a sectional you also want to consider if it is left-facing or right-facing- you don’t want to get your new couch home only to find out it doesn’t work for your space.
- Style and preference: Ultimately, the choice to get either a sectional or a sofa is up to you and your style. If your home has more traditional characteristics, you might want to keep the same theme with your living room furniture. Do you want something oversized, or textured? Something soft or firm? Would you prefer leather or fabric? All of these are questions that you will want to keep in mind when choosing the right sofa or sectional for you.
